In 1848, the Second Franklin County Courthouse in Greenfield, Massachusetts, was built facing the town common. It was a Greek Revival structure, bearing all the typical classical elements of a government building. After a massive fire on Main Street destroyed much of the downtown, it was determined that in order to serve its purpose, the courthouse should be made larger and fireproof. In 1873, when the building was removated, an addition was put on, more fireproofing was added, and the gothic revival façade seen here was created. In 1954, the courthouse was converted into Greenfield’s town hall and nearly returned to its original appearance.
