About this item

This printed and personalized card was presented to student Luella May of South Deerfield, Massachusetts, from her teacher Mary Bryant for excellence in her lessons. The “reward of merit” was issued by printers and could then be individualized by the giver to the receiver. Luella May collected several of these from teachers Julia Wilcox and Mary Bryant around 1875, in recognition of her diligence as a student.
