About this item

The Massachusetts State Senate Chamber remains unchanged today from the configuration it had in 1872. There are 40 senators, one of whom, the president, is elected by his peers. The senators were seated in order of seniority. Above the president rose a statue of George Washington. Among this group is George Sheldon, (#12, left), founder of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association in Deerfield, Massachusetts.
