About this item

In this second of two articles from the Greenfield, Massachusetts, Gazette and Courier, the question of hitching horse-drawn carriages along the town’s main street was once again addressed. The writer was especially concerned that children left unattended in carriages might be in danger of being struck by other vehicles.  He complained that as Greenfield was growing from a small farm town to a larger, busier manufacturing one, the streets could “no longer handle the traffic resulting therefrom in the old time rural manner.”
