Holyoke, Massachusetts, is located on the banks of the Connecticut River in Western Massachusetts. There, rapids fell sixty feet in a mile and a half. After the construction of dams in 1831 and 1849, textile and paper mills were established. Holyoke’s textile industry no longer exists, although some of its mill buildings are being used for different purposes today.
