About this item

Immigrants from Eastern Europe began arriving in the Connecticut River Valley in Massachusetts in the third quarter of the 19th century. While many “Yankees”- White native-born residents- were prejudiced against them, others welcomed the newcomers. The author of this article felt that they were “rather to be welcomed than discouraged.”
