About this item

In New England one of the projects of the Civilian Conservation Corps (1933-1942) was to work to eliminate the gypsy moth (now known as the spongy moth.) It was introduced to the Northeast in the late 19th century by a breeder of silk caterpillars and by the turn of the century it had destroyed forests in the region by eating the leaves of hardwoods, particularly oaks.
