About this item

Although this piece appears to have been written by an African American, it was much more likely anonymously composed by a White member of the Federalist party, complete with a stereotyped version of African American speech. Federalists believed that African Americans deserved more freedoms but felt President Thomas Jefferson went beyond what they considered reasonable by  advocating for African Americans to be on an equal par with Whites in all ways.
