About this item

Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts, opened in January 1799, and this “Catalogue of the scollars” [sic] shows 49 students enrolled for the first quarter term that winter. Although the practice of admitting females was not standard among academies at the time – they were not accepted at either of the Phillips academies – eight female students were among Deerfield’s 49. Fifteen of the first students came from Deerfield families. They all studied reading, writing, and English grammar. The academy’s practice of keeping enrollment lists was short-lived, stopping when it closed temporarily for construction in 1810, and not resuming after it reopened.
