About this item

Fence viewers were elected officials in town governments in early New England. In 1811, Elihu Hoyt (1771-1833) and Solomon Williams (1764-1836) served in that post for Deerfield, Massachusetts. Here, they were called upon to settle a dispute over payment for a fence that divided the property of Seth Sheldon (1787-1860) and John Williams (1751-1816).
