Major Salah Barnard (1725-1795) served in the army throughout the French and Indian Wars and returned to Deerfield, Massachusetts, in 1765. He kept this orderly book at Albany, New York, in May of 1760, and detailed incidents regarding an “expedition under Col. Haviland against Canada” and “General Amherst by Mohawk River.” The spelling is irregular, but is not unusual for the time period. Upon returning home, Barnard restored an old house, kept a store, and returned to farming.
