About this item

This mortar was found in Whately, Massachusetts, by Deerfield Massachusetts historian, George Sheldon.  He deposited it by the front door of Memorial Hall Museum in Deerfield, where it can be seen today. Northeast Woodland Indigenous peoples used mortars and pestles to grind plants into food and medicine.
