About this item

This box held 30-caliber shells for automatic rifles used during World War II (1939-1945.) Soldiers kept the empty boxes for keeping items dry and in a pinch, they might serve as a small table or seat. This ammunition box was brought back to Massachusetts at the end of the war by Robert Pichette of Ashfield, who served with the Yankee Division. It was a gift to his son, Christopher, of Ashfield.
