About this item

This painting was created circa 1990 by Robert Merriam.  It shows the Green River Works as it appeared in 1834.  This was the first site of the J. Russell Company (later called the John Russell Cutlery Company), located on the banks of the Green River in Greenfield, Massachusetts. John Russell made his fortune in the cotton industry, but saw new opportunities up North in the field of cutlery. In 1870, the company moved to Turners Falls, Massachusetts.
