About this item

John Warner Barber (1798-1885) traveled throughout Massachusetts gathering material for his Historical Collections. Published in 1839, his book contained information on every town in the state. Barber was the artist and illustrator as well as the writer for this ambitious project. He sketched prominent buildings and landscape features and then transferred more detailed drawings to blocks of wood which he engraved and used for printing the illustrations. Barber published a similar book on Connecticut towns in 1836.
