New & Noteworthy

The New & Noteworthy feature is intended to promote and elevate a few pages or features in the website by giving them a presence on the home page. This feature is meant to be updated regularly to keep the home page fresh and up-to-date. Some examples of good New & Noteworthy items might be recently added Collection Items, new Lessons, some American Centuries news such as an award or new grant, a Topic Set that requires more visibility, etc.

New & Noteworthy items are the only items in the website that are built using Posts, not Pages. To create one, in the Dashboard, under “Posts” click “Add New Post”. This will give you a blank post form.

Title

type in a title, this will appear below the thumbnail image on the home page as well as at the top of the post

Post Content

this text will appear on the post page. This text should be brief and can describe a little about the new thing(s) or why the item is noteworthy. This text should also include a link to the item such as the collection item page, or the Topic Set or it could even include a link to an external website but if so, the external website should open in a new tab.

Featured image

this image will show as a thumbnail on the home page and as a large image on the post itself. You might need to create this image file if the topic of the post isn’t something that can be represented by a collection item image.

Excerpt

the excerpt text appears only on the New & Noteworthy menu page.

Removing a New & Noteworthy item

To keep this feature both fresh and a small set of items, when you add a new item, you ought to remove an old item. To do this, simply change the old item’s category from “New & Noteworthy” to “No Longer New or Noteworthy”. This will not delete the post, but will make it no longer appear on the Home page.
