Stephen West Williams, M.D.

Stephen West Williams of Deerfield, Massachusetts, studied medicine with his father, Dr. William Stoddard Williams (1762-1829), and then was sent to New York City to King’s College (now Columbia University) for further medical training. Highly esteemed by his medical colleagues, this third Deerfield doctor named “Williams” had a wide practice. He lectured at the Berkshire Medical Institute, the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City, and Dartmouth College. He published several medical texts and genealogical histories of the Williams family. Three of the children of Stephen and Harriet Goodhue Williams lived to adulthood. One, Edward Jenner Williams, became a physician like his father, grandfather, and great grandfather. In 1850 Stephen West Williams and his wife removed to Illinois to join their son. He died there in 1855.
