Elizabeth Brooks Fuller’s watercolors were often made on the spot, and they capture the immediacy of the moment. Here, she has captured another of Deerfield, Massachusetts’ more earthy moments, the burning of the potato vines. Before the widespread availability of fungicides and insecticides, potato vines were burned to eliminate the season’s blights, and the ashes were spread on the fields. Here, the distinctive low long ridge of the Pocumtuck  Mountain rises above the field. Elizabeth (1896-1979) was a member of the town’s artistic Fuller family.
