This gouge would have been used by Eastern Woodlands people such as the Pocumtucks of what is now Deerfield, Massachusetts.  The gouge’s size indicates its use in large woodworking projects such as creating a dugout canoe. A fire would be set on a log and the burned area would be scraped out with gouges like this one. Smaller gouges would have been used for making items such as bowls.
