The Mohawk Trail in Western Massachusetts is one of the nation’s earliest designated scenic routes. Its Hair Pin Curve was a good place for motorists to stop to cool brakes smoking from the steep descent. Those driving up could stop to cool radiators that might reach the boiling point under the stress of the steep ascent.
