The 19th century opera singer Jenny Lind, once proclaimed Northampton, Massachusetts, to be the “paradise of America” and other influential people and institutions were drawn to the town in Western Massachusetts as well. Northampton is located along the Connecticut River and is  surrounded by rich agricultural fields. Smith College, opened in 1871, is located there, and Northampton was also the home of Calvin Coolidge, America’s 30th president.
