About this item

In this post-1926 image of Northampton, Massachusetts, the trolley, once hailed as the best and most modern form of transportation, has given way to the automobile. The landscape also shows signs of the modern age. In the right corner of the picture is the 1848 “Kirkland Block,” on the corner of Main and Pleasant Streets, built by Harvey Kirkland. The neighboring buildings are also by Kirkland. Down the street a bit one sees a distinctly modern structure, the Northampton Post Office.
