American soldiers in the Russian Civil War (1917-22) topped their trenches with huge amounts of barbed wire. Dr. Charles Canedy of Greenfield, Massachusetts, took this picture of encased rolls of it. Notice that the mountain of barbed wire provided a handy observation platform.
