About this item

Dr. Charles Canedy of Greenfield, Massachusetts, joined the U.S. Army in August of 1917, four months after the U.S. entry into World War I. In September of 1918, he was sent with an expeditionary force to Russia as part of an international force to fight the Bolshevik (later Soviet) government in the Russian Civil War (1917-1922). Canedy took this picture of a coastal bunker in Siberia. Its metal cap was intended to protect it from mortar (vertical) fire, but its masonry walls would have been easily breached by most modern artillery. As such, it was intended to provide short-term protection for pickets.
