This photograph was taken by Dr. Charles Canedy of Greenfield, Massachusetts, who served with the U.S. Army in Siberia in 1918 and 1919, when American troops fought in the Russian Civil War (1917-1922) against the Bolshevik (later Soviet) government. The Siberian front was far from the industrial base of Russia, and railroads with armored cars were essential for the armies. Trains loaded with guns and troops regularly patrolled the lines. An American officer (back to camera) inspects this train. It is manned by anti-Bolshevik troops.
