The people standing before their home on Conway Road (now Massachusetts State Route 116) in Deerfield, Massachusetts, are probably the family of Wyciech and Michilena (or Mikalina) Ostroski, who emigrated in 1902, from the Polish regions of Russia to the United States with their young cousin, John Tublonski. This picture was probably taken just after their arrival. The couple were wed that year, and soon after started a family and anglicized their names to “William and Helena Ostrowski.” By the time this photograph was taken, the Ostrowskis owned this home, farmland, and a number of farm animals.
This photograph comes from the Howes Brothers of Ashfield, Massachusetts They created more than 20,000 images of New England rural life from 1890 to around 1910.
