Orlando Ware (1779-1860) was a storekeeper (“trader”) in Deerfield, Massachusetts, from 1802 to 1831. His account books survive for the years 1803 to 1830. Many of his customers, as was the pattern in the 18th and 19th centuries, did not pay their bills regularly. At times, legal action had to be taken to clear the debts. Daniel Burnham of Montague owed Mr. Ware $6.30. The legal fees for the court action amounted to $2.83, making a total of $9.13 demanded of Mr. Burnham on the seventh day of August 1819. The form used was issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with the particulars of this case filled in by Dr. Williams.
