About this item

Elijah Spencer Fuller (1827-1859) of Deerfield, Massachusetts, was 18 when he joined the Sons of Temperance. Their motto was “Love, Purity and Fidelity.” From about 1790 to 1830, this country was known as the “alcoholic republic,” and by 1846, when Fuller joined this society, alcoholism was still a problem. This ornate certificate verifying Fuller’s membership features images that include Masonic symbols.
