The Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association (PVMA) officially began in Deerfield, Massachusetts, in 1870, when it obtained its charter from the State legislature. Originally, members envisioned that a Memorial Hall would be built to hold plaques commemorating the dead from the 1704 raid on Deerfield. The hall would also display the “Old Indian House Door,” one of the few surviving objects from the attack. The association found however, that building the hall exceeded its funds. When the Deerfield Academy, a local private school, moved into a new building in 1879, they sold their first building, built in 1799, to the PVMA.
