George Sheldon was an antiquarian, author, historian, curator, and a founder of Memorial Hall Museum in Deerfield, Massachusetts. His foresight and perseverance were instrumental in the founding of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association in 1870, and the opening of Memorial Hall in 1880. Augustus Vincent Tack (1870-1949) painted this portrait of Sheldon in 1905.
