About this item

Mary Montague was a teacher in Sunderland, Massachusetts, when she wrote this letter to a friend in June, 1852. She was teaching summer school and had twenty-nine scholars. Mary wrote of attending the teachers’ institute in Deerfield, Massachusetts, in the spring (April) and felt that it was worthwhile. She also attended a convention of teachers in Franklin County that she found instructive. Mary was reading Uncle Tom’s Cabin at the time and felt that it was very well-written.
