About this item

In 1938, a devastating hurricane hit the northeastern United States, causing the death of 600 people and damage to 75,000 buildings. This article recounts the hurricane’s effect on Chicopee, Massachusetts. As a result of flooding, 200 residents were left homeless. Natural disasters, such as the hurricanes of 1936 and 1938, and the severe drought which devastated the Great Plains through much of the 1930s, added another layer of hardship to the experiences of Americans living through the Great Depression.
