About this item

Shelburne Falls is in Western Massachusetts.  The village sits alongside the Deerfield River, across from Buckland on the opposite shore.  The riverbanks were once lined with mills and factories, but in October of 1869, a massive storm caused the river to flood, destroying bridges, many businesses, and homes. This view, facing west toward Buckland, shows the river still swollen, with some of the debris from the flood just above the dam.
