Before the invention of the hearing aid, someone might use an ear trumpet, or horn, such as this  rubber one. Deerfield, Massachusetts, photographers Mary and Frances Allen were deaf and after Mary started using a battery-operated amplification system sometime in the 1920s, she gave this ear trumpet to her neighbor, Lucy Andrews.
