In 1913, a pageant was held in Deerfield, Massachusetts, in which the entire Andrews family portrayed Puritans. Pageants portrayed popular versions of the past, but they were stereotypical and far from accurate representations. This photo was taken by Deerfield residents Frances and Mary Allen, who were neighbors of the Andrews family. William Andrews was the father of 10 children and lived across the street from the Allen sisters and provided subjects from babies to adolescents for them to photograph.
The Allen sisters were noted for being female photographers in a field dominated by men, and for primarily taking artistic, rather than documentary, photographs.
