Some bedwarmers had long wooden handles attached to pierced copper or brass pans, and were used to “toast” the sheets by sliding the metal pan filled with hot coals over the surface of the linen before entering the bed. Then the warmer had to be returned to the hearth and emptied of the hot coals. This “pig” could remain in the bed all night or until the water inside it cooled. Before bedtime it was filled with hot water and placed between the sheets. It is made of copper to retain and radiate heat. This example was made in Scotland.
