About this item

Wreaths made of human hair were popular mementos in the 19th century. This example was made by Mrs. Josiah Marvin of Brattleboro, Vermont, and framed in Northampton, Massachusetts. Included is an image of Mrs. Marvin. Sentimental mementoes of past relatives and friends were popular in the Victorian period. Women saved their hair after brushing and kept it in special containers until it was handwoven into wreaths similar to this one.
