About this item

This mid-19th century memento, a hair “arrangement” in a frame, is composed of the hair of 75 people from two different Massachusetts families, one from Leverett and one from Rome. Created by Mrs. Maria Rice Hobart, the hair was twisted into flower, leaf, and bud forms and then framed. Women in this period did not cut their hair and after brushing, they put the hair from their brushes in special receptacles to be saved for projects such as this.
