About this item

This sugar bowl was owned by Electa McClallen (1800-1871) who’s husband, James, founded the McClallen Brothers Farm in East Deerfield, Massachusetts. Once an expensive treat, by 1840, sugar had become much more affordable. Cane sugar was produced using the labor of enslaved people on large southern plantations.  By the late 1830s, those opposed to slavery might also purchase beet sugar.
