About this item

English artisans sometimes placed transfer-printed images of popular heroes such as the Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834) and Benjamin Franklin on their pottery to appeal to an American market. Lafayette toured the United States in 1824, when he visited the tomb of American statesman Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), who played a critical role in securing the French alliance during the American Revolution.
