About this item

This full-length portrait of Emma Lewis Coleman (1853-1942), resident of Deerfield and Cambridge, Massachusetts, shows her in a medieval costume. She was a photographer of note and a serious researcher who, with fellow historian Charlotte Alice Baker (1833-1909), made journeys to Canada to gather information about people taken captive in February of 1704 during a raid on Deerfield by French soldiers and their Native American allies. Colemen authored New England Captives Carried to Canada Between 1677 and 1760 During the French and Indian Wars.
