About this item

This three-quarter view photographic portrait of Charlotte Alice Baker (1833-1909) was taken by G.C. Cox, a professional photographer. An oil painting of Miss Baker with the identical pose was done about 1900, but this photographic image was both quicker and less expensive. Her hair is drawn back severely and she is dressed in dark clothing with a high neck and long sleeves, befitting her age and the times.
