About this item

This photograph of Kate Maria (Shumway) Russell may have been taken just after the 1886 birth of her only child, Janet Lucretia Russell. Kate had grown up in Webster, Massachusetts, where this photograph was taken, and she may have decided to have her child at her family’s home. William Russell worked for the International Paper Company in Turners Falls, Massachusetts. Eventually, the family moved to New York City, where William worked his way up in the company. Eventually, he became an executive (the auditor of the company), and by the late 1890s they were able to afford to spend the summers in Turners Falls.
