About this item

This brick house was built for William Russell, an executive for the International Paper Company. He was born in Sunderland, Massachusetts, attended Amherst College, and later worked in New York. In the 1880s, Russell built a second home in Turners Falls, Massachusetts, where he and his wife had their only child, Janet (b. 1886). This photograph was taken by the Howes Brothers of Ashfield, Massachusetts. They created more than 20,000 images of New England rural life from 1890 to around 1910.
