About this item

At the turn of the 20th century, many Connectictut River Valley farms in Massachusetts were worked and/or owned by Eastern European immigrants such as those pictured here.  Tobacco was one of the major crops in the area at this time. This photograph was taken by the Howes brothers from Ashfield, Massachusetts. They created more than 20,000 images of New England rural life from 1890 to around 1910.
