About this item

This photograph of a 19th century house and barn on Main Street in South Deerfield, Massachusetts, was taken between 1895 and 1902. The gable end, which faces the street, is trimmed with gingerbread, an architectural addition typical of the late Victorian period. The unpainted barn at the back has a similar profile to the house and its gable window matches that of the house’s attic. The Howes Brothers of Ashfield, Massachusetts, took the picture.  The man in the foreground is probably the home’s owner.
