Franklin Spilman Newell (1854-1895), a native of Readsboro, Vermont, was a graduate of the University of Vermont’s Medical College. In 1879, he opened a medical practice in Rowe, Massachusetts; seven years later he moved to Deerfield, Massachusetts, where he specialized in diseases of the eye. Dr. Newell died shortly after suffering an accident in which he was thrown from a horse-drawn sleigh while visiting a patient. A memorial room was dedicated in his honor at the Franklin County Hospital in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Dr. Newell is seen here seated in a buggy, with the Deerfield Academy/Dickinson High School building in the background.
