About this item

Julia Snow was a librarian in Greenfield, Massachusetts, when the First World War started. Soon after, she joined the American Red Cross and in a very short time she found herself far from her hometown. By the end of the year she was in Washington, D.C., serving at Walter Reed Hospital where she photographed two Irish soldiers, Cleary (left) and Cligget (right). Cligget, who was an embalmer, told her, perhaps tongue in cheek, that he would (in the words Julia recorded), “Leave his ‘appy ‘home” for her “any time.”
