This view of Deerfield, Massachusetts’ Mount Sugarloaf and the Pocumtuck Range reveals the mountain silhouette that Pocumtuck Indigenous people called “Wequamps” and believed was a huge beaver turned to stone.  Deerfield was once the Pocumtuck’s homeland and one of their creation stories relates that the beaver was killed and turned to stone because of its greed.
