About this item

The apple tree provided shade for a noon-day rest for the workhorses and the farmworkers in the field behind the Allen House in Deerfield, Massachusetts. The Allen sisters, Frances and Mary, became known for their portrayals of rural New England life in the days before automation dominated the farm.
